This club began at the suggestion of an Orr Community Academy student made to Mayor Richard M. Daley when he served as Principal for a Day at that school in the spring of 1998. The program soon expanded to all CPS high schools.
Participation in the book club has helped high school students improve not only their reading and writing skills but their interpersonal skills as well. Students have commented on how important it is to listen to the comments of others and to process those comments before responding. Adult discussion leaders have noticed how students' self-esteem has grown through participation in the club.
There are six book discussion meetings held during the school year. Students are allowed to keep the books they read for Book Club.
Book Club members are invited to attend a spring conference where they participate in lively workshops, listen to prominent speakers, and receive gift bags. Book Club members may also compete in the Battle of the Books, receive Mayor Daley's Book Club Newsletter, and become members of Mayor Daley's Book Club Student Advisory Council.
Book discussion groups at Senn are held after school and during lunch periods. Students may join by signing up in the school library in September.
