Reading makes immigrants of us all. It takes us away from home, but more important, it finds homes for us everywhere. Jean Rhys ~ novelist
At Senn, students generally start with a Survey of Literature, studying significant works in various genres and refining their writing skills. From there, they branch out to read major works of American, British, and world literature. Advanced Placement courses are available to juniors and seniors, as are electives in journalism, speech, drama, and creative writing. Instructors encourage students to broaden their skills by setting goals for publication and theatrical presentations.
Besides classes, the English Department is involved in several other activities. It sponsors the Multicultural Poetry Festival. Students interested in journalism can actively participate in the SennTimes (student newspaper) and the Senn Literary Journal.

For students wanting extra help starting that first paragraph or refining their class paper, instructors offer tutoring both before and after school.
The English Department also takes great pride in helping students explore their options after high school through college and university speakers, field trips and independent research.
