What is IB?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) provides challenging programs that help students develop the intellectual, personal, emotional, and social skills they need to live, learn, and work in a rapidly globalizing world. Founded in 1968, the IB has sustained its reputation for high quality education for over 35 years. IB programs focus on international mindedness and on promoting a positive attitude towards learning. Collectively, they represent the best curricula from around the world. The IB now has programs in over 3000 schools in over 135 countries.

IB Mission Statement

"The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect."

"To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challening programmes of international education and rigorous assessment."

The IB Diploma Programme is a challenging college-preparatory program offered to qualified, highly motivated 11th and 12th grade students. The program requires a two-year study of six subjects and a 4,000 word extended essay on an independent investigation of a self-selected topic. In addition, IB Diploma candidates are required to gain experience in a range of extracurricular pursuits including the arts, community service, and physical activities.

Universities around the world recognize that IB Diploma Programme graduates have completed rigorous coursework and assessments. The IB Diploma Programme has a distinguished reputation for emphasizing international perspectives and fostering the development of skills and attributes to prepare students for university and life.

Any school wishing to offer the Diploma Programme and attain IB World School Status must first go through the rigorous authorization process. Additionally, each authorized IB World School must undergo program evaluation every five years by the International Baccalaureate to ensure the school is implementing the programme successfully and maintaining IB standards and policies. Nicholas Senn High School was authorized* to offer the Diploma Programme in 1999 and has successfully completed evaluations in 2006 and 2011 with commendations for its performance.
