Design Courses (9th/10th)

The Design program provides students the foundation to competently design new technologies in a wide variety of situations through research and investigation, understand the role of the designer’s responsibility to the community and environment, and collaborate and communicate with others open-mindedly. Through collaborative teams, students will develop knowledge and understand skills from various disciplines to design and create solutions to problems using the design cycle. Students will use and apply technology effectively as a means to access, process and communicate information, model and create solutions, to solve problems. Students will develop an appreciation of the impact of design innovations for life, global society and environments and appreciate past, present and emerging design within cultural, political, social, historical and environmental contexts. Students will develop respect for others’ viewpoints and appreciate alternative solutions to problems, act with integrity and honesty, and take responsibility for their own actions developing effective working practices.

Description:

Computer Science Design is a yearlong course providing students an exploration into topics related to the field of computer science.The program starts by exploring themes of identity and student’s own relationships to people and evolving technology in the world around them. The course heavily emphasizes inquiry - asking questions of ‘why’ behind technology, equity - fairness and access to the digital world, and the basics of computer science content. During the year, students will explore this through units including human computer interaction, problem solving, data & computing, programming in Javascript, and video game design.
